Caring for your home and furniture is a lot like caring for ourselves – a little regular maintenance goes a long way in keeping it looking good. The kicker is, it can also save you money in the long run – here’s how.
- Check Furniture for Lose Screws, Bolts, etc. This is HUGE. Wear and tear overtime can cause screws in legs of tables or chairs to loosen up. Tightening up everything (careful not to over tighten) can prevent furniture from wobbling but also from breaking. Furniture that is not properly tightened is more likely to get damaged. Don’t forget to tighten up those knobs while you’re at it. This quick check up can save you a bundle!
- De-Clutter those Drawers. Over filling your drawers can lead them to collapse and really decreases how long they’ll last you. Spring time is a great time to get rid of old clothes that you’ve outgrown or just don’t need. Consider asking friends and family to help you sort through – take what they like, and donate the rest, or sell it and make a few bucks!
- Check for Scratches and Touch Up. With wear and tear over time most of us will get scratches and marks on our furniture. There is hope! There are products out there like ‘Old English’ furniture polish to cover scratches on both light and dark wood. Always test in a spot that is out of sight first to make sure you’re happy with the way the stain looks before applying to surface areas. These stain products can really cover up those scratches from everyday use. For black furniture, a black sharpie marker can work great to cover up little dings, again, test in an area out of sign first to be sure you’re happy with how it works.
- Vacuum and Clean Your Sofa. Give that sofa a little care and it’ll go a long way. Beat out those pillows, vacuum the cushions (don’t forget underneath!) Look over your set for stains. My favorite cleaning solution for upholstery is simple, a little mild dish soap and water. Blot – DON’T RUB – and be sure to use a clean cloth to soak up as much water as you can. If you have a zipper in the back on the cushion, place a clean cloth under the area you’re cleaning to keep water from soaking up in cushion. Most stains are this easy to remove. Bigger stain issues? Consider calling some carpet cleaning services, many do upholstery too!
- Clean Your Mattress/Bedding. Spring time is a great time to clean pillows, pillow covers, mattress covers, and vacuum your mattress. Don’t have covers for your mattress and pillows? We highly recommend them to not only protect your mattress/pillow but extend the life of them. We offer a large selection of Delaware Mattresses and have a selection of mattress covers to protect from stains, dust, etc.
Taking care of your furniture today can really extend the life of your investment and save you money in the end. We hope you found our Spring Cleaning Delaware Guide helpful, be sure to check our other blog posts for more cleaning and furniture care tips.
