Fewer things can make you feel better than a great night’s sleep.  We’ve all heard the news, the endless benefits of getting that quality sleep we all need.  If you are like me, you have back issues, which makes it even harder to navigate finding the right mattress to achieve that optimal sleep.  Hopefully the information I’m about to share will help you in choosing what mattress is just right for you.

Figuring out what type of mattress is best for your back can be tricky – there are so many different styles, and the price range is HUGE.  I hope to offer some info that will help in your decision process for finding the best mattress for your back.  One style does not fit all.  A lot of folks push memory foam mattresses in Delaware for folks with back issues.  I’m not one of them.  I think comfort super cedes what type of mattress you choose.  The overall consensus is however, that firm mattresses offer the best support and also make it easier to get out of bed than a soft mattress would.

Before we go into the different types of mattresses, let’s cover some basics.  Price does not equal quality.  It’s easy to get taken for a ride when buying a mattress.  There are mattresses out there that can run up to $10,000!  You don’t have to pay a fortune to get a great quality mattress, we are known in Delaware for offering great quality mattresses at discount prices.  Here are some things to look for when you are assessing the quality of your mattress.

  1. Thickness – This is pretty self explanatory – the thicker the mattress, the more layering of foam, coils, quilting, pillow tops, etc.
  2. Coil Count – More is better here.  The more coils, the more densely they are distributed within the mattress, giving you more support.
  3. Warranty – You want to consider the warranty on the mattress you’re choosing and read all the fine print.  Many mattress warranties are void if you do not purchase/use the mattress with its matching box; also, stains or visible wear will often void manufacturer’s warranty – a mattress protector pad is a good investment.
  4. Bed – Often overlooked, the bed itself makes a big difference when you are dealing with back issues.  A simple metal bed frame may sit very low to the ground making it harder to get up out of bed.  A poster bed may sit too high for you to get in and out comfortably.  When choosing a mattress, consider what bed style you will be using for it and find a combination that will be most comfortable for you.Choosing a mattress for back pain relief

Now that we’ve covered the basics, here is a handy guide for understanding the jargon you hear when shopping for a mattress in Delaware.

Memory Foam

Memory foam was originally designed by NASA in the 1960’s for airplane seats.  It’s made of a material called viscoelastic. It is both highly energy absorbent and soft.  The key feature of memory foam is that is molds to your body in response to heat and pressure offering personalized comfort.  It goes back to its original shape once you’ve removed the pressure.  Memory foam prices have come down substantially over the past few years making it an affordable option for many.  Improvements have been made to the design of memory foam mattresses offering better cooling qualities making mattresses more breathable for a more comfortable night’s sleep.

Combination Foam/Coil

Many of the mattresses we carry offer traditional coil construction as well as memory foam and other support foam features.  These may be in the form of a pillow top mattress Delaware or foam encased mattresses.  Both of these styles feature coils in the center of the mattress.  The foam encased mattresses means that the perimeter of the mattress is foam, the amount will vary depending on style.  What this barrier does is better support the coils in the center offering a sturdier and firm mattress.  Some of these styles feature a pillow top.  Pillow top mattresses feature a separate but attached layer on top of the mattress that may have quilting, foam filler, memory foam, you name it.  These can help give an otherwise firm mattress a little more softness and comfort.

Whichever style you choose, the key is to take your time when shopping and try out the different mattresses in the showroom to see what style feels best for you.  Some folks will choose memory foam; others will go with a combination or traditional coil model.  We have descriptions for all our mattresses in our Delaware mattress store and knowledgeable sales associates that can help you compare styles to find what works best.
