UPHOLSTERY CARE

You’ve just brought home your new sofa, love seat, chair – here are some simple tips to help protect your investment and keep it looking fresh and new. Before you do anything, it’s a good idea to read the label usually placed under the base cushion or visit the manufacturer’s website for furniture care information.

To enhance the life and feel of your upholstered fabric furniture:

  • Vacuum weekly to remove surface soil/dust and keep fabrics fresh and long wearing.
  • Brushing off crumbs/dirt can also be effective, but be careful not to use anything too rough that might catch on the fabric.
  • Turn/beat cushions – if your cushions cannot be flipped, periodically beat the cushions to shake out dust and help retain cushions shape from wear.
  • Treat stains immediately. First, blot stain with a clean cloth to remove any excess from fabric – DO NOT RUB. If needed, use a mild soap or detergent diluted in water to treat stain. It’s a good idea to treat a piece of fabric not visible to test fabric in case the cleaner bleaches or stains fabric. Always read the label if you choose to use a fabric cleaner. You can remove dried stains by brushing or vacuuming loose particles. If all else fails, you can call in the professionals to treat fabrics – usually listed in the yellow pages.
  • There are fabric protectors out there – if you choose to treat your furniture, again, test in an area that is not visible (under cushion or base) to be sure it won’t stain or bleach your fabric. Even with a fabric protector – prompt stain treatment is still advised.

Last but not least – there are extended warranty programs that cover just about anything you can imagine – stains, burns, tears, you name it! For a lot of folks, this is well worth the extra money to be able live and enjoy your furniture not worrying so much about the ‘what if’s.’

  • Keep away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Like wood, leather can fade or crack if placed too close to a heat source or in direct sunlight. Keep your leather furniture at least 2 feet away from heat sources or direct sunlight to avoid fading and cracking.
  • Dust and vacuum your furniture often. Clean weekly, use a dry, lint-free cloth and gently wipe, do not rub. When using a vacuum be sure to use soft brush attachment to avoid scratches to surface.
  • If dirt has accumulated, use a slightly damp, clean cloth to wipe. However, if the first time cleaning, test damp cloth in a small inconspicuous area to be sure leather does not absorb water. If leather absorbs water, use only a dry cloth to clean.
  • Do NOT use harsh chemicals, cleaners, or saddle soap on your leather furniture. Use only recommended cleaners.
  • Treat spills and stains immediately. For spills, absorb and blot excess liquid with a dry, clean cloth. Allow area to air dry. It is important to blot instead of wipe to absorb as much of the spill without spreading to surrounding area.
  • For Stains – Never use harsh chemicals on leather, this can cause further damage. For grease stains, blot excess with a clean cloth. The spot will gradually disappear from leather after a short time. If you decide to use any recommended leather cleaner or mild soap diluted with water – always test first in a small, inconspicuous area to be sure it does not stain the leather. If spot persists, contact a professional leather specialist to avoid damaging the leather further.
  • To avoid scratches, keep sharp objects away from leather.
  • Do not place magazines and newspapers on leather surfaces. Leather can absorb dyes and ink easily which can stain and damage leather.
  • Every 6-12 months, use a good quality leather conditioner on your furniture.
  • To ensure the life of your leather furniture, consider purchasing an extended furniture protection plan.
