October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At Urban Furniture Outlet, we want to take a moment to increase awareness, share prevention strategies, and promote local events at resources.

A lot of businesses will put a pink ribbon on just about anything and say it promotes breast cancer awareness. We love those pink ribbons – but like many, we have been impacted by breast cancer and other cancers and want to do our part to share information to promote prevention and support survivors and our local organizations’ efforts.

Prevention means not only health habits: diet, exercise, reduce stress, avoid alcohol and drugs that could increase your risk factors. It’s also knowing your family history and routine check ups.

Routine screenings – self checks and mammogram screenings can mean early detection and saves lives. Localized breast cancer caught early has as high as a 99% survival rate over 5 years. Most health insurance plans cover these routine screenings – if you do not have insurance – there are state and federal assistance available as well as free public events.

Another Delaware program is Delaware’s Screenings for Life offering free health screenings to residents: Call (302) 744-1040 or apply through the Delaware Division of Public Health.

We are a proud supporter of Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) and wanted to let you know a little more about that organization. They raise awareness and offer survivor support programs, education and research/treatment initiatives, as well as advocates for survivors and those impacted by breast cancer. They offer financial assistance for screenings and treatment and have even held mobile screening events during the year.

In addition – they provide support groups, and survivor events and outings promoting connection, healing, and fun! You can also support Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition through their resale shop Great Stuff Savvy where 100% of proceeds go to DBCC! Lot of great finds in clothing, jewelry, accessories, and home decor at incredible prices.

Lastly, October is a great time to get out and participate in local Delaware events like the Multicultural Wellness Fair happening in Seaford, DE this weekend, or Deer Park Goes Pink 5K the following weekend in Newark, DE. Whether you are a survivor or a supporter – there are a ton of pink October events to participate in. Many are listed on Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s site.

For our survivor friends and community – we are rooting for you and wish you well today and always. Thank you to Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition for all you do! :)
