Getting ready to move out of your family’s house?!?  A big life transition, here are some moving tips for your first apartment to help you get the most bang for your buck and make your first experience with your first apartment or home a good one.Moving Tips

  1. Plan a Budget. First important thing you will need is a budget – what can you afford?  Factor in your wages/salary, and expenses – food, rent, clothing, utilities (i.e. phone, electric, cable, etc), insurance, tuition (if applicable), entertainment/eating out, and any other regular expenses.
  2. Think about a Roommate. A great way to save money is by having a roommate.  Perhaps you have a family member or friend whose also looking for a place.  Sharing the expenses can save you a bundle, plus you can divide up the house keeping tasks making things easier on you both!  You will also be able to pool resources like furniture, sofas, tv, dinettes, which will help cut costs for you both!
  3. Look for Giveaways. Family and friends are often willing to part with things they no longer need (i.e. an old sofa set, table set, tv, dishes) when they hear you are spreading your wings and getting your own place.  Don’t be afraid to ask around if anyone is looking to part with their old stuff.  No luck?  Try Craigslist for folks selling stuff cheap.
  4. Do the Labor Yourself. A great way to save money when moving is by doing the hard stuff like packing/moving/set up yourself.  It requires a little more elbow grease, but if you are able or have friends/family who have a truck, or are able to help you with the move, this could save you a bundle.
  5. Wants vs. Needs. This is a tough one.  It’s easy to get excited about buying a bunch of new stuff when you get your own place.  Look at your budget. Budget living is they way to go. Figure out what you really need right now and what can wait.  You need a bed, yes?  But maybe the fancy comforter set can wait till you have more cash.
  6. Look for Furniture Deals.  There are some great deals to be had on furniture, mattresses, and accessories for your home.  Be sure to ask about close-out deals and clearance items where you can save a lot of money!  Here are Urban Furniture, we often run close-out specials we get from our manufacturers and pass along those savings to you!  See why we are where to go for Discount Furniture in Delaware!
