Research say we will sleep approximately 1/3 of our life sleeping, makes you really wonder what we’re doing in the bedroom.  Ever been on a magical vacation or gone somewhere that really felt like a getaway?  Why not turn your bedroom into a peaceful place, a retreat that you could get away from everything?  Here are some great ways to bring paradise home and create a space you can truly relax.

How to Make Your Bedroom a Gateway Retreat

  1. Get Inspired.   There are lots of great ways to gather inspiration – magazines, friend’s homes, hotels, tv/movies, and retail stores!  One idea I love is to recall your best memories, best experiences on vacation, a honeymoon, and recapture that feeling.  Love that dream trip you took to the beach, or Jamaica, or Paris – why not bring it home?  You may already have souvenirs you brought home, if not, revisit pictures and find items that will be that feeling to your space.
  2. Engage Your Senses. We forget our memories are stored behind ALL our senses, sights, smells, sounds, touch, and taste.  Colors and accents are obvious choices but don’t forget the rest.  Scented candles or plants/flowers can really add to a space.  Water fountains can often be found for the indoors, or stereo or nature sound machines.  And touch.  Think textures, patterns, using a combination of fabrics and materials.  Again – if the beach, maybe woven baskets or soft linens.  Paris – silks, faux fur, luxurious blends.  Don’t be afraid to be creative and entertain all your senses!
  3. Add Color. Colors can really set the mood in a space.  What speaks to you is what matters.  Some folks prefer muted, calm colors – neutrals – blues, beige, grays – soft colors.  Others seek drama, passion, something bold – a Caribbean color palette that is fun and bold!!  Or perhaps a Tuscan theme with burgundy, olive, and earth tones to balance it.   Afraid to commit to bold wall colors? You can add color without the commitment with your accents – bedding/pillows, wall décor, vases, flowers, candles, and more!!
  4. Lighten Up.  Lighting is so often overlooked but can really make or break a space.  Work with what you have – then add some personality that ties your space together.  You can add inexpensive upgrades like candles, sheer curtains to soften natural light.  One amazing and funky lamp can really add personality to a room!  Maybe upgrade that old ceiling fan to one with palm inspired blades and bring your ocean paradise home.
  5. Get to Bed. Okay – so we can add all the style we want, but you can’t get around an old, creaky bed.  Investing in a good, comfortable bed and mattress set is worth the money.  Here at Urban Furniture Outlet – we offer a wide selection of affordable mattresses that satisfy any sleep style.  You’ll find memory foam, firm, pillow top mattresses and combinations of all the above. And don’t forget the pillow.  Tired of waking up stiff and achy?  Invest in yourself with a good night’s sleep.
  6. That Personal Touch. Last but certainly not list, add you.  What is it that you hold dearest in that memory of that special place you are trying to recreate? Ask your partner for their favorite memory at that special place. Add a personal touch – photos, poems, a map, sea glass, a party hat – whatever pieces bring you back to that time together.

Spending so much of our lives sleeping – don’t overlook the importance of your space.  Make it your fantasy, your dream, a special retreat you can escape to everyday.  Visit our Pinterest page for more inspiration!  You deserve it!
