Sectionals are a great way to maximize seating in a living space and get more bang for your buck with your living room furniture!  There are a vast number of feature and things to consider when shopping for a sectional including: size, motion vs. stationary, modular, chaise, fabric, etc.  Here are some tips for choosing the perfect sectional sofa for your space.

Knowing the Lingo: RAF, LAF, WHAT?!?

So if you have already begun your search for sectionals in our showroom or on our extensive website – you have most likely come across the terms LAF, RAF.  These are terms used to indicate: ‘Left Arm Facing’ and ‘Right Arm Facing.’  In other words, if you are facing your sectional left arm facing (LAF) would  be the side facing you on left side,  and right arm facing RAF would be on the right.   Choosing the correct arrangement is critical to choosing a sectional that will work best in your home.  You may need the chaise piece on the right side along a wall, or left to allow for traffic to move through the room.  A modular sectional allows you to design your sectional per piece adding an armless seat here or there and building your sectional to be as large or small as you like/need.

Chaise or No Chaise, That is the Question.

Many sectionals that you see will be available with a chaise.  A chaise is a long seat that allows for extended legs.  Chaise sectionals have become very popular in allowing one or more persons to sit with legs extended or allow for extra seating for another person at the end of the chaise.   Things to consider.  Many chaise sectionals are not reversible – meaning the chaise is only allowed on the left or right side.  Some manufacturers only produce the sectionals one way, so you may for LAF Sofa, RAF Chaise or vice versa as the only option.  This goes back to our last section where we discussed the importance of knowing your space and which arrangement works best for the comfort and flow of your living room.  Some sectionals have a reversible chaise either allowing you to order the chaise on the opposite side or a chaise with separate ottoman piece and two-sided chaise cushion that can be put on the left or right side of the chaise.  These are great for renters whose living space may change allowing them to set up their sectional in alternative ways.  This Watson Black Sectional is one of our best sellers at JUST $499!*How to Buy a Sectional Sofa

Motion vs. Stationary.

Another feature to consider is motion vs. stationary sectional.  We offer many affordable motion or reclining sectionals.  Motion furniture has really taken off as costs have come down and made it a more affordable look for many consumers.  Here the options are endless as well.  You may find storage consoles on the loveseat piece, drop down trays in the middle cushion, reclining seats in the sofa, loveseat, and armless seats available to add additional seating to your sectional.  Power motion allows for you to recline at the click of a button!

Other Things to Consider

Last but not least to consider is your occasional table set up with your sectional.  Many folks will opt for a round or square coffee table when buying a sectional, some sectionals will work well with a rectangular or oval coffee table.  Some folks choose an oversized ottoman instead of a coffee table and top off with a decorative tray to hold drinks and remotes.  Chair side tables are a popular choice for giving a space for drinks and remotes at the end of sectional where there may not be enough space for a side table.
